Honoring an Old House With Classic Decor

Did you ever wish you lived in a house where everything was fresh and new? Me, too. My house was build in 1938 and while that didn’t seem so old when we moved here in 1989, I’ve realized I live in a house that is 84 years old. A ripe and wise old age.

One of my pet peeves with this house ever since we moved in has been the pink tiled bathroom, which is pretty small for the main facility. Short of gutting it, we’ve lived with this vintage vibe all these years but a few years ago I decided I just couldn’t stand it anymore. It was an odd pink color no matter how much I cleaned it and the grout was, let’s not even discuss how that looked. I was constantly buying cleaning items and grout patch supplies from Amazon to fix it myself, until one day I received one of those coupon packets in the mail for local vendors.

Enter the Grout Medic! I called the number on the coupon and the next day, a gentleman came and surveyed my small, embarrassing, pink bathroom. After assessing it, he gave me the price of $1,100 to clean the tile and re-do the grout to a pristine white. Honestly, he could have charged me anything, I mean, how much does it cost to have the grout redone in your home?

A week later, his colleague came to regrout my bathroom. This was just in the age of COVID and I was working from home for the first time. So as I sat on a Zoom call discussing company finances, my bathroom, just about four feet away from me, was being steamed and grouted, scraped and polished.

My world had definitely changed in oh, so many ways.

When the time came, the grout medic invited me in to the bathroom, which was suddenly a cheerful, yet gentle pink, with utterly white grouting all around the tiles to complement the pretty pastel color. I was suddenly rocking it as an old house owner, leaning in to the original fixtures and furnishings, embracing the character of the home and the best part was I was no longer mortified by my bathroom.

To celebrate my bathroom I created the “Girl in the Bathtub With Champagne” drawing as it personifies just how I feel now in my 84 year old home.

Let’s see how I celebrate its centennial anniversary. Maybe I’ll schedule an appointment with the grout medic for a touchup!
